Elafonisi at a glance
Elafonisi lies at the south-west corner of Crete. It is an island with a facing stretch of coast, and shallow water and dunes link the two. The area is a protected site under the EU Natura network, with a code of GR4340002 and an area of 271.75 hectares. Do not confuse it with Elafonisos, a different island off the Peloponnese.
The sand looks pink because it contains shell fragments. The colour is not even, so do not expect the same shade everywhere. The national tourism office asks visitors not to move sand and not to collect shells. It also notes that the beach is very busy in summer.

How to get to Elafonisi
Three ways, compared. The bus times are from the October 2026 timetable.
| Way | Departure | Return | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public bus from Chania | 09:00 daily | 16:00 daily | About 2 hours 10 minutes, a figure from an accommodation provider |
| Public bus from Kasteli (Kissamos) | 10:00 daily | 16:00 daily | Check the current timetable before you go |
| Own car | Your choice | Your choice | About 76 km from Chania, a long drive |
| Organised tour | Depends on the offer | Depends on the offer | Compare what is included |
The bus from Chania takes roughly 2 hours 10 minutes, so with a 09:00 departure you arrive around 11:10 and have until the 16:00 return. That is a stay of about 4 to 5 hours at most. The bus from Kasteli leaves an hour later. The bus leaves you a limited stay at the beach. Take the return time into account when you plan the day, and check the timetable again before you travel, because the October plan does not apply to every month.

On the beach
What to know before you go in.
The crossing to the island
Shallow water connects the main beach with the island. How deep it is can change with the weather and the wind. Do not assume the crossing is always knee-deep, and ask locally if you are unsure.

Sand and shells
Leave the sand where it is and do not collect shells. The pink colour comes from shell fragments, so taking even a small amount spoils it for the next visitor.
Crowds
The national tourism office names the large number of summer visitors. If you want fewer people, go earlier in the day or outside July and August. The best time to visit page has the monthly figures.
Drones
Flying a drone can require a permit in Greece, and the civil aviation authority points to an official online map of permitted areas. Unauthorised flights can lead to fines and seizure of the drone. In a protected area with many visitors, it is better to leave the drone at home.
Fire risk and trails
In periods of high fire risk, authorities have closed hiking trails as a precaution, including the Krios to Elafonisi path in June 2024. Check before you plan to walk.
Elafonisi or Balos
Both beaches have shallow water, and both need planning. Balos sits in the north-west, and you reach it by boat from Kissamos or by a road and a walk of about 1 km. Elafonisi sits in the south-west and is a long drive or a single daily bus from Chania. Balos lies within a protected area as well, and the municipality lists rules against camping, fires and littering there.
If you have time for only one of them, pick the one that suits your base. From Kissamos, Balos is close. From Chania, the bus to Elafonisi leaves at 09:00, and the boat to Balos leaves from the port at Kavonisi. You can compare all the west Crete beaches on the beach comparison page.
The press has reported a proposal to limit visitors at Balos to 1,200 people per 3 hours and to extend the model to Elafonisi later. It is only a proposal, and no rule for Elafonisi has been published.
