Three beaches, three kinds of day

Balos, Elafonisi and Falasarna are the best-known beaches in the west of Crete. They are not alike. Balos is a shallow lagoon that you reach by boat or by a track and a walk. Elafonisi is an island with a shallow strip of water between it and the coast. Falasarna is a long coast of connected beach sections that faces the west wind.

No source ranks them, and a best beach is a matter of taste. The questions that matter are practical: how you travel, how much walking you accept, how crowded the place may be and how much wind you can live with. This site is independent and has no link to any authority or tour operator.

Balos

Lagoon, walk and boat.

Why go

The shallow lagoon and the pale, pink-tinged sand are the draw. Boat trips combine Balos with the island of Gramvousa. The road ends above the beach, and the last stretch takes 20 to 30 minutes on foot going down.

What to know

There is no natural shade and no lifeguard. Boat tickets in 2026 start at €36 for adults for Balos only and €40 with Gramvousa. A fee of €1 per person applies.

Elafonisi

Shallow water and protected dunes.

Why go

Elafonisi lies on the south-west corner of Crete. Shallow water and dunes connect the island with the coast. The national tourism office explains the pink colour by shell fragments, and asks visitors not to move sand or collect shells.

What to know

The tourism office mentions heavy summer crowds. The October 2026 bus leaves Chania at 09:00 and Kasteli at 10:00, and returns at 16:00. A bus ride from Chania takes about 2 hours 10 minutes. Do not rely on the water being knee-deep at every crossing, as it depends on the weather.

Falasarna

Long coast, sunset and ruins.

Why go

Falasarna offers five beach sections one after another, restaurants and an ancient harbour nearby. The west-facing coast suits the end of the day, and the west wind shapes the sea.

What to know

In the October 2026 timetable, four buses a day run from Chania, with a change at Kasteli. The last bus back to Chania leaves at 17:30. Opening hours of the ancient site differ between sources, so confirm them.

How to choose

Practical rules of thumb.

No car

Falasarna and Elafonisi have bus links from Chania in the October timetable. Balos has no bus to the beach, but a bus to Kissamos Port connects with the boats. Check the current timetable before you go.

Shallow, calm water

Balos and Elafonisi are both described as shallow. Wind changes how calm they feel, so check the forecast. Falasarna is more exposed to west wind.

Less walking

Falasarna has car and bus access and restaurants. Balos needs a walk of about 1 km, and the boat trip is not suited to significant mobility limits.

Protected-beach rules

Greece lists unspoilt beaches, 251 as of April 2026, where concessions and harmful activities are banned. Local boundaries and rules can differ from beach to beach. Follow the signs on site and do not take sand or shells.

The municipality recommends April, May, June, September and October for Balos and suggests an early start. See best time to visit for the months.

West Crete beaches: frequently asked questions

Which is the best beach in west Crete?

There is no single best. Balos suits a shallow lagoon, Elafonisi suits shallow water and dunes, and Falasarna suits a long beach with restaurants and a west-facing sunset.

Which beach is easiest to reach?

Falasarna has car and bus access. Elafonisi also has a road and a daily bus. Balos needs a boat or a walk from the upper car park.

Which beaches are protected?

Balos is part of Natura 2000, and Elafonisi is a protected area with the code GR4340002. Follow the local rules and leave sand and shells where they are.

Can I visit all three in one day?

That would be a lot of driving. Elafonisi is about 76 km from Chania and Falasarna about 59 km, and Balos needs a boat or a walk. Pick one or two and keep the rest for another day.

Are there lifeguards?

Do not rely on one. The regional profile of Balos says there is no lifeguard service, and duty hours at the others are not guaranteed.
