Falasarna at a glance

Falasarna, also spelt Falassarna, lies on the west coast of Crete. The regional tourism office describes five beach sections one after another, with restaurants, umbrella rental and access by both bus and car. Prices change by season, so ask on the spot.

The coast faces west, which has two effects. The sea can be rougher when the west wind blows, and the beach looks out over the open water at the end of the day. A good sunset is likely in clear weather, but no beach can promise one. This site is independent and has no link to the municipality, the archaeological service or any bus company.

The beach

What to expect on the sand.

Choosing a section

With five connected sections, you can walk along the coast until you find a spot that suits you.

Wind and waves

West wind can make the sea rough. Look at the water before you swim, and keep children close. Do not rely on a lifeguard being on duty.

Food and shade

The regional profile lists restaurants and umbrella rental. Ask about rental and parking fees on arrival. Bring a hat and water anyway.

Sunset

The west-facing coast makes this a natural place for the end of the day. Plan the way back before dark, especially if you rely on the bus. The last departure to Chania in the October timetable is 17:30.

The ancient harbour

A second reason to come.

What is there

Ancient Falasarna was an independent trading and sea city. Excavations have uncovered harbour quays, workshops, defensive towers, graves and baths. The coast rose in antiquity, so the old harbour now lies above the water line.

Ruins and beach are separate

The archaeological site and the bathing beach are different places. Allow time to visit the ruins on their own. Do not treat a beach day as a visit to the site.

Opening hours

Published information differs. One listing says the site is always open and free. A travel report from September 2025 gives 08:30 to 16:00, closed on Tuesdays. Confirm the current hours and any ticket price before you make a special trip.

Combine with a drive

A sunset jeep safari to Balos and Falasarna is listed at €300 per jeep for about 4 hours in 2026. It is a different product from a boat trip and from the land transfer to the lagoon.

Planning a day at Falasarna

A simple order for the day.

By bus from Chania

Take one of the morning buses, change at Kasteli and stay until the 17:30 return. That gives you most of a day on the coast. If you start from Kissamos, the buses from Kasteli at 09:30 and 10:30 are the shortest way.

By car

The beach has road access, and the distance from Chania is about 59 km. A car lets you move between beach sections and the ruins without waiting for a bus. Check your rental terms if you leave paved roads.

Beach first, ruins second

Visit the ruins when the light is softer and the heat is lower, then spend the rest of the day on the sand. Check the opening hours first.

What to bring

Bring a hat, sun protection and water. If the wind is strong, a windbreak or a light layer helps in the evening.

Falasarna: frequently asked questions

Is Falasarna the same as Falassarna?

Yes. Both spellings are used for the same beach and the same ancient site on the west coast of Crete.

Can I get to Falasarna without a car?

Yes. In the October 2026 timetable, four buses a day run from Chania, with a change at Kasteli, and four from Kasteli. Check the current timetable for other months.

Is the sea calm at Falasarna?

That depends on the wind. The coast faces west, so west wind can make the sea rough. Check the water on arrival.

Is the ancient harbour free to visit?

Sources disagree. One listing says free and always open, another travel report gives set hours and a Tuesday closure. Confirm before you go.

Will I see a good sunset?

The beach faces west, so the view suits the end of the day in clear weather. Nobody can promise a sunset, and the weather decides.
