Choosing a base for Balos
The lagoon is reached by boat from the port of Kavonisi or by a gravel road and a walk. Both start near Kissamos, so the town and its surroundings are the closest options. Other bases trade distance for beach access or city life. This page compares areas, not individual hotels, and it does not list prices, since rates and availability change by date.

What the locations tell you.
Kissamos
The town and the port are different places. The Strata office is on Tzanakaki Square in town, and the ships leave from Kavonisi. If you stay in town, the land transfer to Balos starts opposite the Museum of Kissamos, and the port is 3 km away.
Kissamos →Kaliviani
The hotel called Balos Beach gives its location as Kaliviani, Kissamou. The name does not mean that it is on the lagoon. Its rooms are apartments, studios and suites. This is an example of a stay near the road to Balos, not a recommendation.

The Panorama Hotel gives its address at the first access to the large beach, which is an example of a stay by the sea. Falasarna has five beach sections, and the west wind can shape conditions. This is not a hotel review.
Falasarna →Chania
The city is a transport base with KTEL links to Kissamos and to the other two beaches. The longer journey matters if you want the first boat. Ask your accommodation about access and parking in the old town.
Chania →Elafonisi
Elafonisi Resort offers bungalows and houses at the beach, and its FAQ gives regular check-in at 14:00. It suits Elafonisi stays, not a Balos base.

Match the base to your plan.
You want the boat to Balos. Stay in Kissamos. The port is 3 km away and you avoid the long transfer from Chania. The boat check-in is 40 minutes before departure.
You are driving to Balos. Kissamos or Kaliviani put you near the start of the track. Check your rental contract first. Full insurance does not always cover the Balos track.
You do not have a car. Choose Kissamos or Chania, where the buses are. Check the current timetable before you go.
You want beach days. Falasarna or Elafonisi suit that, and you can compare them on west Crete beaches.
Where to stay near Balos: frequently asked questions
Can I stay at Balos Lagoon?
No. The municipality prohibits camping, fires and staying overnight in the dunes. Choose a base in Kissamos or nearby.
Is Kissamos or Chania better for Balos?
Kissamos is closer to the port and the start of the road. Chania suits you better if you want the city and the bus links, but the journey to the boats is 43 km. See the Chania page.
Does the Balos Beach hotel stand on the lagoon?
No. It gives Kaliviani, Kissamou as its location. The name does not describe a position on the lagoon.
